Local Dolgan History
As fascinating and as unique the marvellous preservation of Mammoth Tusks from the frozen steps is, also is the habitat and customs of the nomads that often are the first people to discover the remains thawed out of the permafrost. The Dolgans are a nomadic people living on the tundra. When the thaw occurs they are sometimes fortunate to discover Mammoths and other Ice Age remains. It is the custom of these people to put something back into mother earth if you take something from it. And so it has been known that when tusks are taken for instance, a deer or live stock animal is slain and buried to compensate for the great value of these magnificent mammoth Tusks.
